Conditions of functioning and stability of the Ukrainian food system in unstable macroeconomic environment are determined. The concept of "food system" is explored, its definition is given. The scheme of functioning of the food system, including its mission, factors of functioning, the main parts of the production process and participants, is formed. Positive and negative factors and vectors of functioning of the food system are analyzed. The concept of stability of the food system was investigated, the author's vision of its further development is presented. It is determined that the national food system is related to the developing type. The basic possibilities and threats of the food system are found out. In particular, the most effective opportunities are large agricultural and industrial potential, ability to invest in innovative development, participation in global food chains, availability of human resources. Major threats include military-political instability, ecogenic and climatic disasters, insufficient development of the food system, etc. Indicators for the analysis of the stability of the food system should include at least the following: macroeconomic, socio-demographic and cultural, socio-political, consumer, production and marketing, investment-innovation, infrastructure, economic and financial, environmental groups and risk management. The main factors of changing the type of food system and increasing its sustainability in Ukraine are the following: transformational changes in the country's economy, stabilization of macroeconomic indicators, the development of productive forces and the self-organization of society, and the growth of the needs of the population. In order to achieve the stability of the food system, it is important to develop its agricultural and industrial sectors, to achieve the quality, physical and price availability of food for consumers, and the effective interaction of all parts of the food system.
